We briefly explored: (1) Irish traditional music pub sessions; (2) Irish traditional music in contemporary settings; (3) sean-nós singing and sean-nós dancing; and (4) Irish set and step dancing – in “old-style” practice and in more contemporary practice, i.e. dubstep.
Students will continue their own cybersleuthing journeys to begin investigating/exploring things that personally resonate after having viewed videos in class, video assignments, participating in a lively discussion, and pursuing individual cybersleuthing activities. They will compile and organize, as they proceed, a categorized list of ideas, questions, sources and links. They'll be able to cull from this list, many ideas and sources for their formative blog postings and their summative VoiceThread work. And, they will contemplate the ways in which they are engaged by the things they are learning about Irish traditional music – old and new, and how individual and group work is starting to augment and deepen their beginning understanding of an ethos about both traditional and contemporary practice of this amazing music.
The performers in the videos above are two exemplars of contemporary practice that honor tradition and embrace change and innovation – Iarla Ó Lionáird (Afro Celt Soundsystem) and Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh (Danú).
